Sciton® BroadBand Light (BBL)™ – a flash lamp is not a laser

Unlike a laser, which emits electromagnetic waves at a single fixed wavelength, the pulsed light of the Sciton® BBL™ covers the entire spectrum of a xenon flash lamp. With the use of powerful light filters, the emission is precisely limited to the required wavelength for each treatment. Since the xenon flash lamp releases short, visible, and focused light pulses with high energy density, BroadBand Light (BBL)™ is also referred to as a flash lamp.

FAQ – Acne Treatment

Tanned skin increases the risk of blisters, redness, or lasting pigment change. Please avoid sunbathing for four weeks before BBL™ treatment, and do not use self-tanner for two weeks before your session. To prevent photoallergic or phototoxic reactions, avoid medications that increase skin photosensitivity for at least one week prior, including certain antibiotics (doxycycline, ciprofloxacin), anti-inflammatory painkillers such as diclofenac and ibuprofen, acne medications with tretinoin (Retin-A) or isotretinoin (Aknenormin, Ciscutan, Roaccutan), St John’s wort preparations, and many psychotropic drugs.
After a detailed skin analysis, the flash lamp treatment is performed in the outpatient setting at Praxis Peyman Bamdad. First, a cooling gel is applied to the target skin areas. The flash lamp emits concentrated light pulses through a handpiece. Special light filters limit the effective range to the desired spectrum. To maintain optimal and comfortable temperature, the sapphire glass applicator in contact with your skin is continuously cooled. The light pulses penetrate the skin surface and are selectively converted to heat in targeted areas. This process delivers the light energy precisely for acne treatment, while sparing the skin surface and surrounding tissue.
A mild feeling of warmth or minor redness after BBL™ is normal and typically subsides within a few hours. If follow-up sessions are planned, avoid direct sunlight until the treatment course is complete to minimize the risk of complications such as blistering or persistent pigmentation. As the skin is highly sensitive to UV after treatment, apply a high SPF sunscreen to the treated areas for four weeks.
Typically, you can return to daily life immediately after a session. Warmth and mild redness post-treatment are harmless and fade in a few hours. Make-up can be applied again right away. Depending on total session number, avoid intense UV exposure until your treatment plan is finished, and if necessary, use high SPF sunscreen. Dark spots that sometimes occur after acne treatment with the flash lamp usually resolve within one to two weeks.
The flash lamp is suitable for mild to moderately inflammatory or pustular Acne vulgaris. To achieve the best results, each acne treatment begins with a thorough skin analysis to individually tailor the procedure. Using various filters, the treatment is carried out in two steps: the Sciton® BBL™ blue light combats bacteria in the sebaceous follicles, followed by a yellow light that reduces inflammation, diminishes redness, and lowers recurrence risk. Although most patients see visible improvement after just one session, several treatments at one- to two-week intervals are often needed for optimal results.
When performed by an experienced plastic and aesthetic surgeon, the flash lamp is generally very well tolerated. Temporary side effects include mild redness or swelling, fading quickly. Rarely, mild burns may occur or blisters like those from sunburn. Cooling compresses and moisturizers help healing. Temporary dark spots and light crusting may occur, but resolve within one or two weeks, revealing healthy skin beneath.
