Biostimulators are modern aesthetic medicine treatments that activate the skin’s natural regenerative processes.

Biostimulators work differently from traditional fillers: the effect is not immediately visible as added volume, but develops gradually. By specifically activating the body’s own collagen and elastin production, the skin is stimulated to regenerate itself from the inside out.

Over time, the skin can thus regain its firmness, elasticity, and radiance—for a fresh, harmonious, and natural-looking complexion.

Treatment with polynucleotides is recommended when the skin’s natural collagen production begins to decline. This typically occurs around the age of 30–35. From this point on, the skin slowly loses elasticity and firmness, and the first signs of sagging may appear.

During this phase, biostimulators can help activate the body’s own collagen production and improve skin structure over the long term. This slows down the skin’s aging process, keeping the skin firm and elastic for longer.

In younger patients, polynucleotides can also be used preventively, while in later years they are primarily used to improve skin quality and tighten sagging skin.

Biostimulator treatment is suitable for those who wish to improve their skin quality over the long term and positively influence the skin’s aging process.

Indications include reduced skin elasticity and firmness, tired-looking, thin skin, a desire to improve skin texture, and a desire for natural-looking results without a significant increase in volume.

Polynucleotides are particularly suitable for treatments on the face, the periorbital region (around the eye), neck, décolletage, or hands. They stimulate the body’s own collagen production and can thus contribute to firmer, more elastic, and overall more vibrant skin.

Before receiving Polynucleotide injections, blood-thinning medications must be avoided, as they increase the risk of bruising. Treatment should be postponed in cases of acute infections, inflammation, or skin irritation in the treatment area. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are considered contraindications for aesthetic injection treatments.

In the presence of an autoimmune disease, the use of polynucleotides must be carefully evaluated. 

No, the injection of biostimulators generally does not affect facial expressions.

Polynucleotides work differently from muscle-relaxing treatments: they stimulate the body’s own collagen production and improve skin texture without affecting the activity of the facial muscles. As a result, natural facial expressions are fully preserved.

At our practice in Berlin, we have had positive results with poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra®) and polynucleotides (Philart Croma).

A polynucleotide treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes about 20 minutes. First, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. Depending on the treatment area, a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to make the procedure more comfortable.

The polynucleotides are then injected into the skin using very fine needles. Small amounts are evenly administered into the treatment area.

After the treatment, there may be temporary mild redness, slight swelling, or small puncture marks, which usually subside within 24 hours.

For optimal results, 3–4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart are generally recommended, as the effect builds gradually through the stimulation of skin regeneration and collagen formation.

You can usually resume your normal daily activities immediately after treatment with Polynucleotides. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and typically requires no downtime.

Mild redness, swelling, and small bruises may temporarily occur at the injection sites and in the treated areas. These usually subside within a few hours to a few days. 

For the first 24 hours after treatment, it is recommended to avoid sports and strenuous physical activity, as well as saunas, steam rooms, and intense heat.

The results of a polynucleotide injection develop gradually over several weeks, as the treatment initially stimulates skin regeneration and the activation of fibroblasts.

Typically, the improvement in skin quality, elasticity, and hydration lasts 6 to 12 months. The exact duration depends, among other factors, on age, skin condition, lifestyle, and metabolism.

For optimal results, a course of 2–3 treatments spaced about 3–4 weeks apart is usually recommended. Afterward, maintenance treatments once or twice a year may be beneficial to stabilize the results over the long term.

Polynucleotide injections are generally considered a well-tolerated treatment. However, as with all injection treatments, temporary side effects such as redness, swelling, small bruises, tenderness, or itching in the treated area may occur. These symptoms usually subside on their own within a few hours to days. Prolonged redness or allergic reactions have been reported, but are very rare.
