Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is suitable for all women who, after completing breast development, suffer from excessively large and heavy breasts—regardless of age.

Breast reduction should not occur before the age of 21, as breast growth should be complete. In exceptional cases of gigantomastia, an earlier surgery may be needed for health reasons.

Breast reduction is performed in an inpatient setting for one day.

Diabetes, cardiovascular, and lung diseases require careful risk assessment. Breast reduction is possible after recovery from breast cancer. For women over 35 or those with a family history of tumor diseases, a mammogram should be performed before surgery.

Do not take blood-thinning medications like aspirin for two weeks before surgery. If medication is necessary, discuss the procedure in advance. As nicotine impairs wound healing, avoid smoking one week before and three weeks after the procedure.

After breast reduction, nipple sensitivity may be reduced for several weeks. Usually, normal sensation returns as healing progresses.

If the nipples are not relocated or reduced, breastfeeding ability is usually preserved. For complete certainty, consider surgery after your family planning is complete.

Today’s methods allow for especially scar-sparing surgery. There is usually a scar around the areola and one running vertically from its underside to the breast crease. Occasionally an additional horizontal scar follows the crease.

Significant weight gain may cause the reduced breasts to enlarge again.

If, after a breast reduction, your breasts enlarge again due to significant weight gain, another surgery is possible.

Further changes are possible after breast reduction. However, you are likely to be completely satisfied with the initial result.

Performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, breast reduction is typically low-risk. General risks include wound healing disturbances, bleeding, and infection, but these are rare. Redness, swelling, and bruising may occur but usually resolve within days. In rare cases, nipple sensitivity can be permanently slightly reduced.

Wear a special support bra for six weeks. Avoid physical strain—especially activities involving raising your arms above your head. Also, avoid sun, sauna, and sports for at least six weeks.

You can expect to see the desired results between six and twelve weeks after surgery, once your breasts have reached their final shape.

You will be socially presentable about seven to ten days after breast reduction. Refrain from sports and strenuous activity for at least six weeks.

Health insurance covers breast reduction only if there is significant physical impairment.
