Lower Eyelid Surgery 

The eyeball sits in the bony orbit cushioned by fatty tissue. This tissue is stabilized and held in position by a thin but strong connective tissue layer. As we age, this connective tissue loses firmness and becomes lax. The underlying fat is no longer supported and bulges forward. Under-eye bags form. Lower eyelid surgery can effectively treat under-eye bags.

Unlike other parts of the body, the skin under the lower eyelids is only partially padded by a very thin layer of fat. If the skin is already thin or becomes thinner with age, the underlying muscles and veins become visible, resulting in dark circles. Lack of sleep, allergies, malnutrition, and various illnesses can worsen these symptoms.

Lower eyelid surgery can be combined with upper eyelid surgery or a brow lift. This combination is often recommended for optimal results. It is also possible as part of a facelift.

For a transcutaneous lower eyelid surgery, scars run about one millimeter below the lash line and laterally in a natural smile crease. They are usually no longer visible after two to four weeks.

For a transconjunctival approach, no scars are visible since the incision is made inside the eyelid mucosa.

After lower eyelid surgery, you should cool your eyes and avoid physical activity. Sun, sports, and sauna should be avoided for 14 days.

The first checkup after lower eyelid surgery takes place the day after the procedure. If performed on an inpatient basis, the check is during a round before discharge, otherwise in our practice. If a transcutaneous approach was used, stitches are removed after five days.

After lower eyelid surgery, you will be socially presentable again after approximately 14 days.
