Depending on the scope, liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or general anesthesia. It is most commonly performed on the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. While smaller areas can be treated on an outpatient basis, for larger procedures it is advisable to spend the night at a clinic for monitoring.

Although you will notice a change in body shape immediately after liposuction, the final result will only be visible after at least three months.

Liposuction is performed under inpatient conditions, and—depending on the areas involved—under local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or general anesthesia. Before surgery, the areas to be treated are marked while standing. Then a so-called tumescent solution is injected, containing a local anesthetic, sodium bicarbonate, and a small amount of cortisone. This not only numbs and reduces swelling, but also loosens the fat for easier removal.
After a waiting time of 20 to 30 minutes, the actual suction begins with the vibration method. Very fine cannulas are used to remove fat located just beneath the skin, so the skin can tighten to the new contour due to its elasticity. To prevent dents and irregularities, the experience of your treating doctor is especially important.
The most significant complications after liposuction are dents and irregularities. As with any surgery, wound healing disorders and infections may occur. In some cases, fluid can leak from the cannula punctures during the first 48 hours—this is harmless. Bruising and swelling can last up to three weeks. Postoperative pain is similar to sore muscles and typically disappears after about 14 days. Hardenings may develop that will resolve over several weeks.
