Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is suitable for women of any age who, after breast development, are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts. Surgery can achieve an aesthetic result aligned with the patient’s self-image. If the breasts are notably asymmetrical, balancing can be achieved with different-sized implants.

Breast augmentation should not be performed before the age of 21, as breast growth should be fully complete.

Every breast augmentation is preceded by a detailed examination, written patient information and thorough photo documentation. The breasts are measured and presented as a 3D model***. The choice of implant is made together with the patient. Blood-thinning agents like aspirin should be avoided for two weeks prior to surgery. Please discuss with your physician, if taking these cannot be avoided temporarily. Smoking increases wound complication risks significantly, so we advise you to stop smoking for at least two weeks before and three weeks after the surgery.

Diabetes, cardiovascular or lung disorders are factors that require careful risk assessment. For women over 35 years of age or with family history of tumors, a thorough examination by her GYN, maybe including a mammogram should be done prior to surgery.

After the procedure patients stay for one night in the clinic. The next morning Dr. Kersten will visit you to ensure all is well. After that you can typically leave the clinic. Stitches are removed after two weeks. An additional check-up takes place six weeks after surgery.

Pain is mainly due to the muscle being stretched by the implants. It’s easily manageable with medication and typically subsides after three to five days.

Scarring depends on the method used: along the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. The choice of method depends on implant size and shape, breast anatomy, and areola size, and is determined individually after a thorough pre-examination.

A distinction is made between teardrop-shaped (anatomical) and round implants, available in a variety of shapes and sizes. The best implant for you is determined after thorough consultation and examination.

Most breast augmentations use the dual-plane method, placing the implant partially beneath the major chest muscle so the upper part is covered by muscle and the lower by breast tissue. This reduces risk of capsular contracture. Other placements, e.g., under the breast gland, may also be appropriate in some cases.

Modern silicone implants last much longer than earlier models and do not have to be replaced. The natural aging process can alter breast shape, which may be addressed with a lift or implant change in the future.

Breastfeeding is generally possible after augmentation. 

After breast augmentation, wearing a special bra – and in some cases a ‘Stuttgart belt’ – is essential for six weeks to prevent implant migration. Arms should not be lifted above shoulder height for the first two weeks; physical rest is advised. Avoid sun, sauna, and sports for at least six weeks.

When performed by a specialist, breast augmentation is usually low in complications, but swelling, bruising, healing issues and infections, like any surgery, may occur. Specific risks include asymmetry due to capsular contracture and may require corrective surgery. We recommend having insurance in case there are follow-up costs. 

Not all requests for augmentation can be met due to medical or psychological reasons. Increasing by more than two cup sizes isn’t advised due to higher risk of healing problems and other complications. Oversized implants exceed the skin’s natural stretching limit and may lead to poor blood flow.
